TWENTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD SWEDISH-MOZAMBICAN ANALOGUE PHOTOGRAPHER WINS SOUTHNORD'S UP NEXT OPEN CALL

Alexandra das Neves Lehmann, a Swedish-Mozambican analogue photographer wins the Southnord UP NEXT open call. The award is a solo exhibition in the newly opened art space in Stockholm. This open call is an annual event that features the works of young, up-and-coming Afro-Nordic artists.

This year's theme explores the intersection between art, nature and future. "Alexandra’s holistic and poetic proposal impressed us with its spatial vision and strong interpretation of the brief," says Anton Isaksson, guest curator and young up-and-coming artist in his own right.

The exhibition titled "Earthbound: A Visual Journey of Earth's Embrace" explores the connection between humanity and the natural world, focusing on Earth as our constant companion through life; providing us care and comfort, while also symbolising our ultimate destination and final home in death. Photography is the very core of Alexandra's craft; they find balance between working on self-initiated projects and commission-based work. They experiment with continuous personal documentation, such as a lifelong video capture of their mother, which goes in tandem with a photo journal chronicling their own life in Mozambique.

The exhibition opens on 7 September 2023 as part of the grand opening of Southnord's new art space on Södermalm in Stockholm.

Opening party: 7 September 2023, 17:00-20:00

Opening hours: Thursdays and Fridays 12:00-18:00, Saturdays 12:00-16:00
