Southnord Celebrates One Year of Championing Afro-Nordic Visual Arts
Southnord, the pioneering platform dedicated to advocating for the expanded field of Afro-Nordic visual art, is proud to celebrate its first anniversary.Since its inception, Southnord has been at the forefront of showcasing diverse voices and facilitating artistic and cultural exchange across the Nordic region.
Over the past year, Southnord has launched multiple initiatives and collaborations, includingthe highly acclaimed Southnord Artfest 2023, which brought together artists, curators, and audiences in celebration of the creative and critical output of black and Afro-diasporic artists. These initiatives have provided a platform for underrepresented voices and established Southnord as a key player in the Nordic art scene.
“Looking back on our first year, we are incredibly proud of what we've achieved,” says Marcia Harvey Isaksson, founder of Southnord. “Our mission has been to amplify the rich and diverse narratives within the Afro-Nordic artistic community, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. We are excited to continue this journey and look forward to what the future holds.”
The anniversary celebrations will include the opening of Lidiya Solomon’s solo exhibition Black Bodies Walking Around. Lidiya is the winner of the annual UP NEXT open call, which spotlights young emerging artists. This exhibition opening and one-year celebration will be on 5 September 2024 at Southnord's art space in Stockholm. This will include an artist talk between Lidiya and this year’s guest curator Kihwa-Endale at 18:00.
“We are thrilled to mark this occasion with such a poignant exhibition,” adds Marcia. “Lidiya’s work perfectly encapsulates themes that are pertinent in this moment in history, as she explores displacement and uncertainty, grief and loss, and never-ending hope.”
