Black Granite and Alabaster: Yemisi Wilson’s Tribute to her grandmothers

Southnord proudly presents sculptor Yemisi Wilson’sfirst solo exhibition, in which she celebrating the lives and legacies of her grandmothers, Ebunola from Nigeria and Anna from Sweden. Through her art, Yemisi explores her dual heritage, reflecting on the cultural and emotional connections between two vastly different women who never met but share a place in their grandchildren’s lives.

As a firstborn daughter named after both grandmothers, Yemisi’s work is a deeply personal tribute. The exhibition captures her journey of discovering what it means to have roots in Nigeria, a country she’s never visited, and in Sweden, where her family's history is deeply rooted in both Värmland and Stockholm.

This exhibition beautifully captures the bridge between continents and generations, while also honouring the lives of two women who were so significant to their families trajectories. Yemisi’s work speaks to the journey of reconciling who we are with where we come from. We’re thrilled to have her bring this narrative to life at Southnord during Black History Month and Afro-Swedish History Week," says Marcia Harvey Isaksson, founder of Southnord.

The opening night will include an artist talk between Yemisi Wilson and Marcia Harvey Isaksson. Additionally, Yemisi will host a sculpture workshop on 12 October, offering the public a chance to try out carving and sculpting in alabaster. Spaces for the workshop are limited.
